What do you see when you look in the mirror?

Earlier this month The Female Lead exhibited a special project at the V&A, the world's leading museum of art of design. As a part of their Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser collection, we had the opportunity to showcase the What I See Project by The Female Lead's founder Edwina Dunn.

What is the What I see Project?

One of the first Female Lead projects was the What I See Project. The What I See Project is a global digital art and science project exploring women's perception and self-expression: how different experiences shape who we are and how we perceive ourselves and the world around us.

The beauty behind What I See is the user. What I See's power lies in how people express themselves and the ability to explore and compare these perspectives across age, location and other factors. Whether it is through video, imagery, written text or tweets; the What I See Project is a community you help create through the power of your voice along with the voices of others from across the world.

What I See is - simply put - a collection of individual points of view that grows and changes with your participation.

"When I look in the mirror I see a warrior"

We filmed over 1,500 women from all over the world. These videos are part of a global collection of women’s voices coming together to share, connect, and actively shape what it means to be a woman. Originally created for the What I See Project, the films aimed to reflect on self-perceptions and female identity.

The project has since evolved into The Female Lead, grounded in Edwina Dunn’s heritage as a data science pioneer, the charity listens to women and amplifies their stories, aiming to stimulate positive change for everyone.

"Women – and girls – are not one caricature. We are different in our needs, wants and ambitions – and the style/way we use to achieve our goals. When girls choose the elements they like or which resonate, they are putting together a game plan – taking the Lead in their own Lives. That’s why we call it The Female Lead."
